Berberine for Bladder Health: Evidence, Interactions and Cautions
Berberine is an ingredient used in bladder supplements marketed to women. Below is what it has actually been studied for, how strong that evidence is, the drug interactions and cautions on record, and the primary source our grade rests on — all drawn from the HerWellReport ingredient dataset.
Also sold as: berberine HCl; granular berberine
What the evidence says about Berberine
Genuine research base, almost all of it outside urinary health. Carries the longest interaction list of any ingredient in this category and is the main reason to check a bladder supplement with a pharmacist. The metabolic evidence is genuinely substantial: a systematic review and meta-analysis of 46 randomised trials in type 2 diabetes found berberine lowered HbA1c, fasting glucose and LDL cholesterol, mostly as an add-on to standard treatment. That is what the research supports, and it is not a bladder claim. Searching the medical literature for berberine and overactive bladder or urinary incontinence returns no trial of berberine itself; the single result is a 30-patient pilot of two different alkaloids, protopine and nuciferine, which was neither randomised nor placebo-controlled.
The grade "strong for metabolic outcomes; thin for bladder" means: strong — Consistent results from multiple randomised trials or a systematic review, in people, for this use. Grades are explained in full on our methodology page.
