Glucosamine and chondroitin for Bladder Health: Evidence, Interactions and Cautions
Glucosamine and chondroitin is an ingredient used in bladder supplements marketed to women. Below is what it has actually been studied for, how strong that evidence is, the drug interactions and cautions on record, and the primary source our grade rests on — all drawn from the HerWellReport ingredient dataset.
Also sold as: Glucosamine sulphate; glucosamine hydrochloride; chondroitin sulphate; oral GAG replacement
What the evidence says about Glucosamine and chondroitin
NCCIH's review of glucosamine and chondroitin covers osteoarthritis only, where results are mixed and the American College of Rheumatology recommends against both, and it does not mention bladder or interstitial cystitis at all. The EAU chronic pelvic pain guideline rates intravesical chondroitin sulphate as possibly effective (level 2b) and weakly recommends offering intravesical hyaluronic acid or chondroitin sulphate before more invasive measures, but that is a clinic catheter instillation, not a capsule. The oral interstitial cystitis data come from open-label studies of multi-ingredient products such as CystoProtek, which also contains hyaluronate, quercetin, rutin and olive kernel extract, so nothing can be pinned on glucosamine or chondroitin alone.
The grade "very limited orally; moderate intravesically" means: moderate — Randomised trials exist for this use but they are few, small, short or mixed. very limited — Mostly animal, laboratory or anecdotal evidence, with at most a single weak human study. Grades are explained in full on our methodology page.
